NINE; Pipedream (Upcoming show)

From the innovative company that brought A New Brain to Vancouver last year comes the Tony Award-winning musical NINE.  NINE follows the story of Italian film director Guido Contini as he struggles to create his next movie while dealing with the women in his chaotic personal and professional lives.

Music and lyrics by Maury Yeston (Titanic, Grand Hotel), book by Arthur Kopit. Produced by April Green, directed by Mike Mackenzie (A New Brain, Pipedream), musical direction by Kevin Michael Cripps (Footloose, Exit 22), and choreography by Meagan Ekelund. Starring Brian McBride, Kathy Fitzpatrick (Footloose , Exit 22), Madeleine Suddaby (Footloose, Exit 22), Britt McLeod, Tristin Wayte, and Deborah Allman. Godspell; Pacific Theatre (Upcoming show)

Pacific Theatre ends its season with Godspell. Director Sarah Rodgers has chosen to set her production inside an episode of Laugh-In, in a novel take on the popular musical.

Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Wicked), book by John-Michael Tebelak. Directed by Sarah Rodgers, musical direction by Nelson Boschman, movement coaching by Lauren Bowler, costume design by Carmen Alatorre, set design by Bryan Pollock, and lighting design by Itai Erdal.  Starring Kat Gauthier, Tim Bratton, Kaitlin Williams, Joel Stephanson, Benjamin Miller, and Shalyn McFaul.

The Wedding Singer; Fighting Chance (Upcoming show)

The company that wowed local audiences last year with Rent, has set its sights on 80s nostalgia.  Fighting Chances Productions presents the BC premiere of The Wedding Singer. Based on the Adam Sandler film, The Wedding Singer /features music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin and book by Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy.

Directed by Ryan Mooney (Rent, Fighting Chance), with music direction by Christopher King (Thoroughly Modern Millie, TUTS), and choreography by Anna Hassard. Starring Andrew Halliwell, Lexy Campbell, Cassandra Nantel, Tyson Coady (Joseph, RCMT), Alex McMorran, Sean Parsons (Footloose, Exit 22), Jessica Kelly, Sable Strub, and Linda Noble.

A Year With Frog and Toad; Carousel Theatre (Upcoming show)

Based on the children stories by Arnold Lobel, book and lyrics by Willie Reale and music by Robert Reale, A Year With Frog and Toad is the story of two woodland friends over the course of a year.

Starring Todd Talbot (Annie, TUTS), Allan Zinyk (Seussical, Carousel), Darren Burkett (White Christmas, Arts Club), Janet Gigliotti (Les Misérables, Arts Club), and Kaylee Harwood (Les Misérables, Arts Club).  Directed by Carole Higgins, musical direction by Gordon Roberts, choreography by Melissa Young, set design and props by Heidi Wilkinson, costume design by Yulia Shtern, and lighting design by Ereca Hassell.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Royal City Musical Theatre (Upcoming show)

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is back again, this time at the Massey Theatre.  The second of three local Joseph productions audiences will see this season (Footlight, RCMT, TUTS), Royal City Musical Theatre’s version promises to deliver an excellent time.

Bat Boy: The Musical; Patrick Street (Upcoming show)

The tabloid-inspired Bat Boy: The Musical opens in Vancouver this week, courtesy of Patrick Street Productions (The Full Monty, Into the Woods).
With book and lyrics by Keythe Farley & Brian Flemming and music by Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde: The Musical), the award-winning Bat Boy premiered off-Broadway in 2001.  Bat Boy: The Musical stars Scott Perrie (High School Musical 2, URP), Bree Greig (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Footlight), Scott Bellis, Katey Wright (The Full Monty, Patrick Street), Timothy Brummund, Hector Johnson, Matt Palmer, Ian Rozylo, Katie Murphy (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Playhouse), and Meghan Anderssen (Thoroughly Modern Millie, TUTS).

Billy Bishop Goes to War; Arts Club (Upcoming show)

The Canadian classic musical Billy Bishop Goes to War returns to the Vancouver stage this month.  Written and composed by John Gray with Eric Peterson, directed by Sarah Rodgers, and starring Ryan Beil and Zachary Gray, Billy Bishop features a pianist and one actor portraying 18 different characters.

Footloose; Exit 22 (Upcoming show)

The 80s are back in the spotlight in North Vancouver for Exit 22’s closing show of their 2009/10 season.  Directed by Gillian Barber and starring the collective talents of Capilano U third-year musical-theatre students, Footloose is the stage adaptation of the film cult classic.

Passing Strange; PBS (Upcoming Show)

Spike Lee’s documentary film of the musical Passing Strange makes its national debut on PBS, this Wednesday, January 13, 2010.   Lee’s 135-minute documentary records some of the show’s final performances before it closed in 2008.

Passing Strange features a Tony Award-winning book by Stew, lyrics by Stew, and music by Stew and Heidi Rodewald.

The film stars original cast members Stew, Rodewald, de’Adre Aziza, Daniel Breaker, Eisa Davis, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge and Rebecca Naomi Jones.

Locally there will be multiple airings, so set your PVRS.  It plays at 6 pm and then repeats at 11:30 pm on Shaw 87 and also at 9 pm on Shaw 27.  Check your local listings.
